IDB CONDUCTS VMAT TRAINING TO GEAR UP FOR THE SUCCEEDING PHASE OF DECOMMISSIONING

COTABATO CITY – IDB culminated its three-day VMAT Training on Effective Communication and Engagement with Combatants cum Teambuilding Activity on 28 July 2020 at SASA, Camp Abubakar, Barira, Maguindanao.

Spearheaded by the Operations, Planning and Training Section (OPTS) in close coordination with the Verification Monitoring Assistance Team (VMAT) Commander Bekir Avnamak, the said capacity development activity aimed at firming up the roles and responsibilities of the VMATs during the verification and decommissioning process as well as on the Secured Arms Storage Area (SASA) operations. Moreover, the training intends to enhance the communication skills of the VMATs in terms of effectively interacting with the combatants and dealing with possible issues and challenges that may arise; and strengthening teamwork and camaraderie among them as well.

The said training participated by 18 VMATs – of which three (3) were internationals and 15 were local members, entailed lectures on effective communication and cultural sensitivity in engaging with the MILF combatants and several workshops. The training concluded with a teambuilding activity facilitated by the Ad Hoc team which aims to meet the gap needed to develop the participants’ leadership, planning, and peacebuilding skills as a team through various fun-filled activities that tested their strategy-building capacities.

The VMAT Training on Effective Communication and Engagement with Combatants cum Teambuilding Activity is among the many preparatory activities conducted by IDB to continuously capacitate its staff in preparation for the forthcoming decommissioning process. //CRA
